This is third seminar on The New Economics sponsored by the people at Improvement Associates in concert with Ronald Moen. The workshop takes its title from one of Dr. Deming’s books which makes sense as Ron worked with Dr. Deming at over 70 of his famous workshops. The workshop will be held at:
RADISSON HOTEL EDMONTON SOUTH EDMONTON, AB THURSDAY & FRIDAY May 06 & 07, 2010
Purpose
To gather inquisitive people to pursue in-depth understanding of Dr. Deming’s management principles as described in The New Economics, where he states that the present style of management is a modern invention and represents “a prison created by the way in which people inter-act.” Often, systems are designed to include competition between people, teams, departments and divisions. A better approach would be to have people work together as a system towards a common aim.
Using videos, interactive group discussions and assignments, participants will:
Learn more about Deming’s four components of a System of Profound Knowledge – appreciation for a system, understanding variation, building knowledge and the human side of change.
- Discover how to reduce costs while improving quality, safety and joy in work.
- Review examples of application such as Jonkoping County Healthcare System (Sweden) and the Toyota Production System.
- Gain skills in how this approach can be applied to make system-wide improvements, particularly in Canadian healthcare.
- Leaders, formal and informal, inside and outside healthcare, will find this workshop attractive. It can be a first step to transformation to a new style of management.
Expectations: Registration is limited. Full participation is expected for both days (no substitutions).
Cancellation Policy: Cancellations will be accepted up to five days prior to the start of the workshop. After participating in the two day workshop, if for any reason participants did not find it of value, a full refund will be provided.

Chief Financial Officer (Government Agency)
“The workshop challenged me to analyze business issues with more rigour, to look at all facets of a system rather than through a single point of view.”
Chief Communications Officer (Healthcare)
“The depth of subject knowledge and the ability to communicate it to the participants during the session was invaluable. I was able to step back from existing perceptions, and view a number of organizational issues in an entirely different and illuminating light.”
Client Services Manager (Not for Profit Organization)
“Refreshing to attend a workshop that did not spend time espousing deceptively attractive im-provement platitudes. The New Economics workshop is highly extensible across industries.”
